Shahjahan the Mughal Emperor built a new walled city in 1639 which was declared the capital of the Mughal Empire until 1857.
The British East India Company then gained control of the region and moved the capital to Calcutta until George V decreed it should be moved back to Delhi in 1911. A New city, under the guidance of Edwin Luytens was created to the south of the old city and the Houses of Parliament were moved here, in 1947 India gained independence from the British.
